My Skywatch is giving me erratic
readings, why? |
The speed measurement is based
on magnetic transmission. The turning
impeller creates a magnetic field that is detected in the windmeter. If the windmeter is close to another magnetic
field (computer, power line, electronics, appliances) it may display erratic
results (numbers jumping around) when the windmeter is not in use or the
impeller is not turning. |
|
The impeller is stuck, what
do I do? What caused this? |
If you find that your impeller
is having a difficult time turning, it may have an accumulation on its
spindle. Carefully pull the impeller
off of the spindle.
If you are having a very difficult time getting the impeller off, we suggest
you spray a small amount of WD-40 on the spindle. This should lubricate the spindle, and make
it easier for you to carefully pull it off.
Once you have the impeller off of its spindle, rinse the spindle with clean
water, and gently wipe off any substance that may have accumulated on or
around it. Also, rinse the impeller
with clean water, especially the part where the spindle slides into the
impeller.
Once the impeller and the spindle are both dry, place the impeller back
on the spindle. Your windmeter should
now be ready to go. |
|
How do you get the top off? |
Tops of the SW-2 and SW-3 cannot
be taken straight off. One side
of the cap must be pushed up first, and then the entire cap will be removable. |
|
Does it come in different colors? |
Only one color is available
for each instrument, green for the SW-2 and brown for the SW-3. |
|
What's the difference between
these and the other windmeters? |
The instrument needs only be
held up to measure windspeed from any direction, instead of pointing into
the wind. |
| |

| |
Do I need to calibrate the hygrometer? |
No, this Swiss-made instrument
has a self-calibrating hygrometer to measure humidity accurately for many
years. |
|
Can the impeller be replaced? |
Yes |
|
How do you access the clock? |
The clock is only displayed
in standby mode. To set the clock press and hold the middle button for
1-2 seconds. The mode button increases minutes where the wind button changes
the hour. The unit must be turned on to set the clock. |
|
How do you change the battery? |
Unscrew the back cover of the
unit. Insert the battery on the bottom with the positive side(+) facing
you. Then insert another battery with the negative side (-) facing you.

| |
How do I remove the impeller? |
On the back of the unit (with
the case open) near the impeller is a screw. Back this screw out about
one turn (not all the way out), turn the impeller clockwise slightly and
pull out. Replacement is the opposite. |
|
The unit won't stay on - what
is wrong? |
The battery may not be making
good contact with the unit. Contact us for assistance. |
|
How do I change the units of
measure on my Skymate? |
For the Skymate Plus and older
Skymate models, the unit must be turned OFF in order the change the units
of measure using the mode buttons. For the new model Skymate, when the
temperature is displayed, press and hold ON/OFF button, then press MODE
key to toggle between F or C. Release the ON/OFF and MODE buttons when
the desired unit is displayed. See our manuals page. |
|
How do I get the most accurate
readings? |
This
instrument is very accurate when aligned with the winds axis. The best
way to get accurate readings is to determine the direction of the wind
with a tell tale (or string). When taking readings - keep the unit held
high. For varying wind directions, you should slowly sweep your arm from
side to side to allow the unit to sample wind from various directions. |
|
Why do the wind readings seem
lower than they should be? |
This
could be because you have the unit in AVG mode. Make sure you are sampling
current wind speed. Another reason your unit could be reading low is that
you are not taking your readings directly into the wind. |
|
Why don't my readings match
the Weather Channel? |
Remember that windspeeds vary
quite a bit from area to area. Your wind speed in your yard, or on your
boat (etc) will not be the same as where the local weather station has
their wind detection device set up. You need to also account for trees,
houses, obstacles, that will interfere with wind. Temperature and windchill
will also vary. |
|
My temperature (& humidity
on the SM-19) reads too high |
Make sure your hands and face
are not near the temperature (and humidity on the SM-19) sensors. The heat
and moisture from your hands and face will affect the unit's readings.
Humidity (relative humidity) is based on air temperature also, so an incorrect
temperature reading will result in an incorrect humidity reading also. |
| |

| |
What if my unit will not come
on? |
First,
try changing the battery. If this does not work, remove the battery for
4 minutes and then re-insert. This is a way of clearing the unit. |
|
What happens if it freezes up? |
This is a sign of a low battery.
Remove the battery and replace. |
|
Why does the altitude keep changing? |
The
altitude is a calculation based on changing air pressure. Changes in the
air pressure will cause the altitude to change. Your altitude should be
calibrated right before use as an altimeter. |
|
How do I change the units of
measure? |
With the SkyMaster on, select
the mode you wish to change, press and hold the ON/OFF key and, while holding,
press the mode key to change units. |
|
What if I get inaccurate readings? |
Each reading can be affected
by the use. For windspeed, align the impeller with the wind's axis. To
determine the direction of the wind, you can use a with a tell tale (or
string). When taking readings - keep the unit held high. For varying wind
directions, you should slowly sweep your arm from side to side to allow
the unit to sample wind from various directions. For temperature and humidity,
be sure the sensors (just under the impeller) are not near a source of
heat (hand, body, sun, etc.). The sensors in this unit are extremely sensitive. |
|
How long does the battery last? |
The battery life is varied by
the mode the unit is in. Due to the very accurate hygrometer, the humidity
measurement will use more battery life. Barometer and windspeed will maximize
the life. Average battery life is 2-4 months. |
|
Is a PC Interface available? |
No. |
|
I bought it a few months ago
and never used it. I opened it up
the other day and it doesn't work. What
do I do? |
First replace the battery. If
that does not solve the problem, you can contact us, or the company you
purchased from. If the unit is within the 1-yr warranty (proof of purchase
required for all returns), it can be replaced if deemed defective. If the
unit is out of the 1-yr warranty, you can purchase a new unit direct from
us at a discounted price. |
|
Why would my dew point be reading
off? |
Dew point is a calculation of
temperature and humidity. If anything is affecting these measurements,
the dew point reading will be off. |
|
Does it measure absolute pressure? |
The SM-28 must be set to the
current air pressure, and will track changes accordingly. If the air pressure
is set to the known absolute air pressure (versus relative air pressure)
it will then track and measure that. |
|
Does it measure density altitude? |
No. |
|
What if my humidity is reading
off / 100%? |
Recalibrate your humidity by
following the instructions in your manual. You will need the voltage input
numbers that came with your unit and instructions. They are unique for
every instrument. (Please see our manuals page if you have lost your manual) |
|
What if I threw away the instructions
and the paper with the humidity calibration numbers on it? |
If you have lost your calibration
numbers, you will have to send your unit in for calibration. Estimated calibration charge is approximately
$30.00. Contact us for more information. |

How do I get the impeller to
pop up? |
Press in on the two buttons
on either side of the impeller housing. Do not pull on the impeller housing |
|
How do I get the impeller housing
to rotate |
Turn the black impeller and
rotate to the closed position when not using. |
|
How do I change the battery? |
This can be done on your own
with a jewelers screwdriver, or by a jeweler. Remove the six screws on
the back of the unit and replace with a fresh battery, type CR-2032. Take
care when removing the screws and back so as not to damage or lose any
parts. |
|
How long do the batteries last? |
Approximately 1 year. |
|
My barometer is reading off. |
This
could be that you haven't adjusted your altitude. Remember that the unit
is designed to be within 0.06 inHg. Also note that barometric pressure
varies greatly from one location to another. This makes it hard to compare
to anything - except another barometer in your immediate vicinity. Do not
compare it to the local weather report if the source is miles away from
you. |

in any mode for one second, then release (backlight will come on). The
backlight will automatically turn off after 3 seconds. If within 5 seconds
after it shuts off, the button is pressed again, the light will stay on
for 15 seconds. |
|
How do I change the units of
measure? |
While in the desired mode (windspeed,
temperature, altitude, air pressure), press and hold the button for four
seconds, and the units of measure will scroll through the available units.
Release the button when it is set to the desired unit. |
|
When does the instrument switch
off? |
The Windmates will switch off
automatically one minute after the last button is pressed, unless the impeller
is turning. Note that the digits will flash before it shuts off. |
|
Can I make it stay on longer? |
Yes. When the digits are flashing,
press the button briefly once. The instrument will now remain on until
the button is pressed again, or the batteries drain completely (400-500
hours) |
|
Can I change the battery? |
Yes, it is the same as changing
a watch battery. Care must be taken to keep the unit watertight. |
|
Where is the temperature measured
(models 2, 3, 4 only) |
The thermostat is located inside
the unit, attached to the metal back. It will change temperature rapidly,
although not instantly. Holding the metal back to an object that is the
same temperature as the air will speed the temperature adjustment. You
may also hold it in the water to obtain a quick water temperature reading. |
|
Does the compass need calibrating?
(models 3 and 4 only) |
It is very important to calibrate
the compass each time you use the instrument, and necessary before the
first reading after buying the product. Follow the instructions in the
manual page 10. |

I can't get the compass to work
right. |
The compass needs to be calibrated. In
order to do this you need not be around any electrical devices such as
in a house, in car that is turned on, near a radio, near electrical transformers,
etc. You must also place the unit on a flat surface & make
two full clockwise rotations in a relatively slow & controlled manner. The
instruction manual is incorrect in stating that these rotations need to
occur within 30 sec for each rotation. |

| |
How do I change it to read in
feet or meters? |
For units that have been purchased
after 2000, when you open the cap (not the battery end) there will be 4
switches on the opposite side of the circuit board from where the cap snaps
in. The 2nd switch from the right
(or the 3rd switch from the left) is the unit of measure switch. For Meters, push the switch back (away from
you), and for Feet, pull the switch forward (towards you). |
|
What does it mean when it reads
dashes? |
When there are dashes displayed,
the unit is unable to take a reading. The
following may cause this to occur:
- the water not being at least 2 ft. deep
- you are trying to take a reading in a pool, bathtub, toilet, or in any
other water that is contained
- the frequency may be incorrect for the depthsounder that you are using
(remember 200khz for the external transducer and 400khz for the self-contained
handheld version)
- the battery may need to be changed
- there is a defect in the unit, in which case you should immediately contact
Speedtech for a RA# to return the
unit for testing and evaluation. |
|
How can I use the hand-held
version as the external transducer version? |
For those units that have been
purchase after 2000, all that is required is the purchase of the conversion
kit. This includes a transducer
at the end of a 12ft cable, and a cap which the cable snaps in to |
|
At what end is the transducer? |
For the external transducer
version, the transducer is located at the end of the 12ft cable.
For the handheld version, the transducer is located in the cap (the end
the switch points towards). |
|
Where does the battery go? |
The battery goes inside the
unit, and is located at the opposite end of the transducer (the end of
where the lanyard attaches). Twist
off the end and the battery will be visible. |
|
How often do I have to change
the battery? |
The life of the battery is good
for about 500 10 second readings.
If you have been using your depthmate in continuous read mode, this will
drain the battery faster. Therefore, you may not get up to 500 readings
if you have been using it in the continuous read mode. |
|
How do I change it to continuous
read mode? |
For units that have been purchased
after 2000, when you open the cap (not the battery end) there will be 4
switches on the opposite side of the circuit board from where the cap snaps
in. The 1st switch from the right
(or the 4th switch from the left) is the continuous read switch. To change to continuous read mode, pull the
switch forward (towards you). |

/ ES |
| |
How do I shut it off? |
The unit will shut off automatically
after 18 hours. Saving all values in memory. |
|
How far away can the impeller
be from the receiver? |
It should not be more than 20
inches. The slower you are going the closer they will be to read slower
speeds. The faster you go the farther apart they can be. |
